Up & Coming Talent: Filthy Sweet

Tired of that
lackluster nine to five job? Don’t
worry...here is some inspiration to
kickstart your dreams.

We’ve all seen them. These incredibly talented celebrities out there that are living the dream. They get to do what they love...as a career. Who does that?!
The answer to that question is...everyone should do what they love. But the faith to follow down that path can sometimes be overwhelming. Will you be able to make a solid career and live off of your dream?
It has been said that everything that you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear. You need to live fearlessly. Easier said than done, am I right?
But the truth in the matter is that you don’t get anywhere in life without a little courage. The thought of failure, especially at something  you are passionate about, can cause anyone to have a nervous breakdown. I myself was a little worried about starting my writing career. But you power through any turmoil and nay-sayers, because this is what you want to do. And you CAN do it.
Whether you are a highly sought-after actress like Sarah Michelle Gellar and want to start a baking business known as Foodstirs, or you are a small town girl with dreams of becoming one of the state’s best wedding planners and create a business called Simply Gypsy Events, you should follow your dreams. Maybe you want to start a calligraphy business called Ivory Ink Co., or you are Reese Witherspoon and you want to start your own clothing line named after your grandparents, Draper James. There are numerous examples of people that actually go for what they want, so why shouldn’t you?
We chatted with some up and coming stars about their journey with doing what they love to do. These artists are forging their own destiny one show at a time. Audience after audience and song after song, they make their way into hearts of new fans everywhere.
When you think about all of the people they have met and the places they have seen, who wouldn’t want to follow their path. We spend the majority of our adult, and sometimes adolescent years, at work. So why not enjoy what you are doing. We get this one chance on Earth to make the best of our time here. So, go start following your dreams.

 Filthy Sweet

They look young, because they are, but don’t let that fool you. This powerful threesome rocks with the best of them.
They get you on your feet, making you glad you choose their show for your night out. Playing mostly original music, they bring some familiarity with the occasional cover song plugged into their sets.
Performing for half a decade already, they have accumulated a fan base spread across the Midwest. The reason why? They are awesome.

Improper Adult: When did you get started as a group?
Jackson Kleingartner: All three of us in Filthy Sweet were members of our old band Frantic Antics.
Emma West: Yeah, we started in 2012. Jackson and I, and an old member of our band ran into each other at a show. I was in a different band at this time. They asked me if I wanted to practice with them sometime. So we got together a couple of months later, in August of 2012. Ever since then, we have just been still performing.
JK: I was in a band called Eastmen, and a couple members and I found Emma and Chris. I went to high school with Chris. We rebranded as Frantic Antics, a six-piece band back then.

IA: Who plays what in the band?
EW: I am the bass player. Christopher McIntyre plays guitar and he is our lead singer. And Jackson plays drums.

IA: What was one of the first songs that you performed together?
EW: I want to say one of the first ones that I can remember is “Killing in the Name Of” by Rage Against the Machine. We learned so many songs all at once, in a span of two and a half months.
JK: We were exclusively a cover band back then.

IA: As a whole, do you guys have one musical role model?
EW: We are very diverse. We listen to a lot of different influences, and you can really hear that in our music. We only have one album out right now, but each song is very different from the last one. I don’t really think that we have one specific artist. We all just have a broad range of styles.

IA: Do you all write your own music, or are the originals left to one specific band member, or an outside songwriter?
JK: It usually starts with Chris.
EW: Yeah, Chris is the creative one. He will come up with the ideas, and then Jackson and I will put our parts into it. We will all help put it in a better direction.

IA: What do you enjoy most about playing at different festivals?
EW: Personally for me, it is meeting new people. I love meeting all of the other bands. Honestly, every time that we play a show, we will meet a band and a new group of people. Talking outside with everyone is my favorite part.
JK: Yeah, I would say that is it for me too. The music playing is a big part of it, because nothing is as fun as performing for new fans. Everywhere we go, there is one person that stands out in a crowd, that we can recognize.

IA: What is your favorite thing about being in a band?
JK: We each have our different roles in the band. Responsibilities. We need all of that to run smoothly. We can all trust each other to take care of different things. Chris does a lot of the writing, Emma does the booking and marketing, where I take care of the finances.
EW: Yeah, we help each other out. We have this family bond. Where one is lacking, the other succeeds. We have been together for five years. We know everything about each other. I couldn’t imagine doing it with anyone else.

IA: How did you come up with the band name?
JK: We were sick of trying to think of a band name that sounded cool.
EW: We hated Frantic Antics so much. When we rebranded, we knew we needed to pick something that we aren’t going to hate for the next few years.
JK: The way we figured that out, was to find something that we didn’t think was cool. If you think that is a cool band name, it won’t be in a year.
EW: We wanted something simple and to the point.
JK: We did a Rob Zombie thing. His lyrics are just so eccentric. We would look at a sheet of his lyrics and pick words at random.
EW: Chris said filthy smooth. And I was like how about filthy sweet. It rolls off of the tongue a little bit better.
JK: Filthy smooth was just a little bit too...yeah.
EW: So we thought there we go, we finally have it. And we started sending our name out to people immediately after that.

IA: If you guys could play a duet with any one living artist or group, who would it be?
EW: We probably all have different opinions on this. Like Chris loves Jack White. We also love Foo Fighters.

IA: Do you have any advice that you would like to give to an aspiring group?
JK: If you are hoping to make money with it, start getting a name for yourself. You can’t take yourself too seriously.
EW: Commitment. Stick to it. Find a group of people that you fit well with and just go for it. We have been doing this for five years. We have missed out on proms, parties, and all sorts of stuff. But we knew this is what we wanted to do, and we just stuck to it. No matter what happens, we stuck together.
JK: Find a group of people that you can have a fight with, and not have that ruin things.
